Part two of Storey's Stories covers George's June competition diary — three open meets, three different venues, and a 300m seasons best that stands as the highlight of the month. George came into June carrying some illness from the start of the month, which coloured his performances across the early meets, but the Blackheath and Bromley open at the end of the month provided the result he had been looking for. Here is the second instalment, in George's own words:
JUNE
I attended three different open meets in June. Unfortunately, I had been ill at the start of the month so my performances were slightly slower than normal.

STRATFORD SPEED GP
At Stratford, I ran the 100 metres in 12.67 seconds, which I was perfectly happy with given the circumstances, and it was also one of my better times so far this season. A highlight from the meet was seeing the fastest male athlete race. The best time of the meet was from an athlete who ran a sub-10 100 metres in 9.90 (+2.2 m/s).
BFTTA OPEN MEET
I raced at Lee Valley in one of their BFTTA events in the 100 metres and 150 metres. Like Stratford, I was trying to get back to form after having spent over a week in suboptimal condition for myself. The first 100 metres round was unfortunately disappointing, as my acceleration wasn't great and I definitely could have put more power into the track as I was sprinting. The second 100 metres round however was more successful, where I ran a faster time into a small amount of headwind. There was also an amusing moment during the 150 metres, where a young lad had put 15 seconds down as his 150 metres time, and so he was in the same race as all of us much older male athletes! Needless to say, he disappeared from all of our views rather quickly. My times were slightly slower than what I'd ran in May, but overall, my times both in the 100 and 150 were much better than my previous racing seasons. At Lee Valley, Donald Brown's commentary is always very fun to listen to and keeps spectators very engaged, and their cheering from the stands is always fun to hear. Lee Valley and Stratford have very close seeding so you're always racing against those of a very similar time to yourself, meaning the races feel very close which pushes you to run even harder. Bromley open meets tend to be a bit quieter and smaller by comparison, which I like as you feel quite relaxed warming up and less tense both during and in between races. But one of the best things about Bromley is, like Stratford, the legend himself, the coach & official Mark is present!

BLACKHEATH AND BROMLEY HARRIERS AC OPEN
Bromley was definitely in terms of improvement the highlight of this month. Whilst my 100 metres was not as quick as I would have hoped for, I was able to run a seasons best in the 300 metres with a time of 40.55. My top end speed is much better than my acceleration so, along with the 200, the 300 metres is one of my personal favourite events.
OVERALL
All three of these open meets and tracks have lots of good qualities that I enjoy. For Stratford, it's definitely the location, the high standard of athletes around you and the Mondo track surface as well as the good music.
A 300m seasons best of 40.55 at Bromley — in an event that clearly suits his profile — is the kind of result that builds through a season. His 300m PB of 40.10 was set in 2025, and with the longer speed endurance distances suiting him better than the pure acceleration of the 100m, the sub-40 target remains firmly in sight. Part three of Storey's Stories will follow as the season continues.
