Fifteen Momentum Sports athletes have been selected to represent their school counties at the 95th English Schools Track and Field Championships, taking place on 10 and 11 July at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Selection for English Schools is county-based and entry-standard driven — athletes must first hit a qualifying mark at county level before being chosen to represent their county team. With 46 counties competing across junior, intermediate and senior age groups, the championships are one of the largest school athletics events in the world, and for generations of athletes it has served as a first taste of competing on a genuinely major stage. The roll call of former English Schools competitors who went on to represent Great Britain at Olympic and World level is long.
Alexander Stadium needs little introduction. Renovated between 2019 and 2022, it hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games athletics programme and will host the European Athletics Championships later this summer. It is one of the best facilities in the country, and it is the backdrop against which these athletes will compete.
The Momentum Sports contingent spans four counties and a range of events. Surrey are represented by Aurelia in the 80m hurdles, Daisy and Emma in the 200m, Giles in the shot put, Gracelyn in the 400m hurdles, Liliana and Lily in the 200m, Tom in the 800m, and Yohan in the 100m. From Middlesex, Grindan lines up in the 200m, Joe in the 100m hurdles, Ruby in the 800m, and Shak in the 400m. Izzy represents Berkshire in the 100m hurdles, and Tia competes for Middlesex in the long jump.
Several of these athletes are already established names in the junior rankings. Gracelyn Kendeck won bronze at the England Athletics U20 Championships in the 400m hurdles earlier this season. Tia Garrard won the ESAA South East Schools Combined Events title with a heptathlon PB of 4951 points. Lily Cowen sits eleventh in the UK U20 200m rankings.
The championships will be streamed live on Vinco Sport across both days. Good luck to all fifteen.
