Over the weekend of 23rd–24th May, several athletes were in action across two separate competitions — the National Athletics League and the IFAM Outdoor in Brussels.

National Athletics League — Championship South Match 1, Crawley

The National Athletics League runs two divisions: the Premiership at the top, and the Championship split into North, South, West and East regional groups. The Championship South involves six clubs — Basingstoke and Mid Hants, Blackheath and Bromley, City of Portsmouth, Crawley, Herne Hill Harriers and Kingston AC and Poly — competing across three fixtures, with the top two teams earning a place at the Promotion Match in September. Match 1 was held at Crawley on 23rd May. Sophie Osborn, racing for Blackheath and Bromley, ran a four-second personal best of 2:09.13 in the 800m. It was her first 800m outdoors since 2024, having returned to the event earlier this year, and to improve by four seconds in a team match setting is a significant step. The photos from the day, captured by AC Phots, show why the NAL is one of the more atmospheric team competitions on the domestic calendar. Christina Kirkby, representing Kingston AC and Poly, ran her first outdoor 400m of the season — 60.52s, a solid opening time for the year. Also competing for Kingston, Peter Wilkins had one of those days where everything comes together at once, running personal bests in three events: 34.91s in the 200m, 73.47s in the 400m and 2:49.84 in the 800m. Three PBs in one competition is a serious return! Over at the Championship West Match at Yate on the same weekend, Naomi Dawson competed in the 100m hurdles and ran 15.81s — her fastest time of the year so far.

While the NAL was taking place domestically, Sam Ige and Rebecca Keddie travelled to Brussels for the IFAM Outdoor — the International Friends Athletics Meeting — held at King Baudouin Stadium on 23rd–24th May. The IFAM is a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze event, which means the standard of competition is high and the conditions are well-suited to athletes chasing times. It draws competitors from across Europe and beyond, and for an athlete looking for a strong early-season performance in a competitive field, it is a well-chosen target. Sam ran 10.60s in the 100m — a seasons best. Running under 10.70 at a Continental Tour event is a strong performance, and the time reflects where Sam is in his preparation coming into the summer. Rebecca ran 2:07.42 in the 800m — also a seasons best. The 800m at international level is a very different proposition to domestic club competition, and holding form across a competitive field to run a personal seasons best at an event of this calibre is exactly what you want from a trip to a Continental Tour meeting.
