About Bob Lewis: The Man Behind the Memorial Meeting

Momentum Sports · 7 August 2026

The Bob Lewis Memorial Meeting takes its name from a man who gave a great deal to athletics - as a competitor, as a supporter of other athletes, and as a presence within the sport at every level. With the fourth edition of the meeting taking place on 30 August 2026, it is worth setting out who Bob Lewis was and why the meeting exists in his name.

Bob Lewis was a masters athlete who competed in the 400m, winning the European Masters Games Championship over that distance, one of the most competitive events in masters athletics, drawing runners from across the continent who have continued to compete and improve well into their forties, fifties and beyond. The photographs above show him racing in a Great Britain vest at the European Masters Games in 2011 and at the World Masters Games in 2017 — showing his competitive career that spanned multiple international championships across different decades.

He was also a proper supporter of the sport. The tributes that have accompanied the meeting since its first edition in 2023 consistently describe him as someone who invested in other athletes and in athletics more broadly, someone who showed up, who encouraged, who cared about the sport beyond his own performance in it. That kind of contribution is harder to measure than a championship medal but often more durable in its effect on a club or a community.

Momentum Sports is honoured that Bob's family are happy for his name to be associated with this event. The meeting is held in memory of all he did for the sport, which makes it something more than a standard open meeting. The lemon drizzle cake prize for the best Masters 400m on age grading is there because Bob loved lemon drizzle cake!

The Bob Lewis Memorial Meeting is open to athletes of all ages across all track and field events. It is part of the European Masters League calendar, meaning Masters athletes accumulate league points on the day as well as competing for the age-graded 400m prize. Further prizes include TF1 Athletic T-shirts for the best male and female performer in each age group from U14 to U20, and medals for U10 and U12 athletes.

The meeting takes place on 30 August 2026 at the Weir Archer Athletics and Fitness Centre, Kingston Road, KT1 3PB. Brought to you by Momentum Sports, sponsored by TF1 Athletic with Places Leisure as venue sponsor. Entries are open on OpenTrack via the Bob Lewis Memorial listing.
