SAL Match 2: Double Relay Wins and Seven-Event Heroics in Kingston

Momentum Track Club · 23 July 2026

Momentum Track Club attended the second Southern Athletics League match of the 2026 season at their home track — the Weir Archer Athletics and Fitness Centre in Kingston upon Thames — on 21 June, with a large squad turning out across an extensive programme of track and field events. The match finished second overall, but the headline story was the depth and breadth of the squad that competed across both strings and multiple events throughout the day.
Home matches in the SAL are a particular occasion for MTC. The Weir Archer Stadium is where the club trains daily, and fielding a full team across the complete programme on home soil draws in athletes from across the age groups — from U18s making early SAL appearances to Masters competitors who have been part of the squad for years. Both ends of that spectrum were visible on 21 June: Ethan and Maddie among the younger athletes competing, and Masters competitors Tom Carter and Ann Davies representing the club alongside athletes also racing in relay teams and field events.
Three athletes merited particular mention for the volume of events they covered across the day. Oscar Frost competed in seven men's events: the 400m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, triple jump, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Competing across five individual disciplines and two relays in a single afternoon is a significant physical undertaking, and the kind of contribution that accumulates points across the table in a way no specialist athlete can replicate. Oscar Morrell covered six men's field events: long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin — a full throws and jumps programme. In the women's events, Tayla Benson competed across five: 100m, 400m, 100m hurdles, hammer throw and 4x100m relay. Laura Darcey also covered five: 400m hurdles, high jump, shot put, discus and javelin. Athletes who can do this consistently are the backbone of any league team.
Pat Logan ran his fastest 100m of the outdoor season so far on the day, continuing a consistent run of performances across open meets and league fixtures through the summer.
The standout team result came in the mixed 4x400m relay, where both strings won. The A string — Harry, Oscar, Rebecca and Sophie — ran 3:51.39. The B string — Harrison, Josh, Bella and Lily — completed the race in 4:14.87. Double string wins in a relay event contribute a significant block of team points, and the mixed 4x400m, which draws from across the senior men's and women's groups, tends to reflect the overall depth of a squad's 400m capability. A 3:51.39 A string time at this level is a strong performance.
The overall second-place finish at a home match, with a squad that stretched from U18s to Masters across track, field, sprints, hurdles and relays, reflects a club competing across the full width of its membership. The depth visible in the squad photograph — a large group gathered under the Momentum Track Club gazebo in the sunshine at Kingston, is the point of why we do all of this.
