The ESAA Inter Counties South — the Cunliffe Trophy — took place at Medway Park in Gillingham on Saturday, and it was a good day for athletes who train with Momentum Sports.
For anyone unfamiliar with the competition, the Cunliffe Trophy is the South East Schools Inter Counties Track and Field Championships. Athletes qualify through their county championships, with the top finishers invited to represent their county against the other leading schools counties in the region — Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, Middlesex and Sussex among them. It is one of the stronger regional fixtures on the schools calendar, and the standard reflects that. Medway Park is a solid venue for it too — an Olympic-standard track that has hosted international competition and served as a training base ahead of London 2012.
Across the day, athletes who train under Momentum Sports collected 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and a bronze.
Tom won the Junior Boys 800m in 2:02.26. Running sub 2:03 in a championship race at junior level is a strong result — the 800m at this level is competitive and the field is rarely forgiving.
Ruby took silver in the Junior Girls 800m with 2:14.24, and Yohan picked up silver in the Junior Boys 100m in 11.2.
Alex competed in the Inter Boys 3k, finishing in 9:44.41.

Aurelia ran 12.02 in the U16 Girls 80m Hurdles to take bronze — a sharp time in a technically demanding event. Emma also ran the hurdles, clocking 12.44.
Daisy took silver in the Junior Girls 200m in 25.34, and Emma — who had already run the hurdles — came back to win the Junior Girls 300m in 40.88. Running two events and winning one of them is no small thing.
Pippa threw 10.28m to win gold in the Junior Girls Shot, and Giles rounded off the day with 47.90m in the Inter Boys Javelin.
It is also worth noting what it means to be at this competition at all. Athletes do not just turn up to the Cunliffe Trophy — they earn their place through their county championships. Being selected to represent your county at the Inter Counties means you were among the best your county had to offer. The performances on Saturday also carry some weight beyond the day itself, as Inter Counties results can factor into county selection for the English Schools Track and Field Championships, which takes place at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on 10th and 11th July. In 2026 that event enters its 95th year — it is one of the oldest junior athletics championships in the world.
