Kingston Kestrel Club News
4th April 2012
Thursday Session
There is still plenty of space in the Thursday group for Kestrels who are in Year 6 or above. The main difference between the Tuesday and Thursday sessions is that we concentrate solely on running on Thursday, instead of giving athletes the chance to also do field events on Tuesday. That means we help you with your running technique, make you stronger, and improve your fitness.
Those who have attended on Thursdays since November have seen big improvements in their times in competitions and in the Kestrel Challenges, so it is well worth coming along if you want to have an advantage over your friends and rivals, and want to see your times come crashing down!
Kestrel Raffle Tickets
All raffle tickets that Kestrels collect between now and the end of July 2012 will be added up, and the athlete with the largest amount in both the Tuesday and Sunday groups will win a £40 sports voucher, and those with the second largest in the two groups will win a £10 voucher.
Remember that competing for Kingston and Poly is a great way of obtaining raffle tickets, with 3 given out for every competition, so ask Richard or Gill for details on how to join the club if you’d like to take part in regional competitions!
The leaders of each group, as of 1st April 2012, are as follows:
Tuesday Group
Annabel Hobday: 15
Kathryn Bartle: 15
Eleanor Bartle: 10
Caitlin Grealy: 9
Amelia S, Hannah R: 8
Sunday Group
Amy Richardson: 12
Daniel Dutra: 7
Charlie Townend: 6
Hannah Parkinson: 6
Ellie Arnfield: 6
Competing for Kingston and Poly in March
March was another relatively quiet month, with the cross country season coming to an end and the track and field season not fully beginning until April. The Surrey Championships on March 3rd saw Amy Richardson brilliantly pick up a bronze medal in the Under 13 Girls’ Long Jump. The final Downs League Cross Country took place the next day, and we had Kathryn Bartle, Eleanor Bartle, Blaize Lee-Blackwood, Hannah Roberts, Annabel Hobday, Finlay Hardwick, Charlie Townend, James Hinton, George Chaplin and Rhianna Reynolds representing K&P and their respective schools.
Well done to everyone who competed over the Winter! As we now move into April, the number of events and opportunities to race increases. As well as Open meets for anyone and everyone, there will be the Ebbisham League (for boys), the Lily B League (for girls) and the Young Athletes League (both), so we hope to see as many Kestrels as possible take part!
Kestrel Challenge March 2012
Taking place during another week of beautiful weather, the March Kestrel Challenge resulted in many Sprint badges being won, with 18 athletes achieving very good standards in the 300m. Remember that competing for Kingston and Poly is a great way of obtaining raffle tickets, with 3 given out for every competition, so ask Richard or Gill for details on how to join the club if you’d like to take part in regional competitions!

Competing for Kingston and Poly in February
There was a relative shortage of regional and national competitions in February, but plenty of Kestrels competed when the opportunity arose. The third and penultimate Epsom Downs League race took place on February 19th, and saw Eleanor Bartle, Kathryn Bartle, Gregor Hooke, Finlay Hardwick, George Chaplin, Sammy Woolhouse, James Hinton and Rhianna Reynolds representing the club, with Annabel Hobday and Sam Shaw also competing for their school in the same event. Rhianna also took part in a few Bushy Park runs earlier in the month (4th and 11th Feb).
The outdoor track and field season is approaching quickly, and there will be many more events available to members of the Kestrel club after April. As well as Open meets for anyone, there will be the Ebbisham League (for boys), the Lily B League (for girls) and the Young Athletes League (both), so we hope to see as many Kestrels as possible take part!
Kestrel Challenge February 2012
We had a whole host of badge winners in February—the weather is steadily getting warmer and the Kestrels took full advantage! The Triple Jump in particular resulted in some impressive scores, and there were Personal Bests aplenty in the 200m and 800m runs!
The following athletes won badges during the Febraury Challenge 2012: (S=Sprints, E=Endurance, J=Jumps, T=Throws)
Green: Sophie Hargrove (E), Hannah Lester (E), Oliver Wilson (E), Daniel Dutra (E & J), Lucia Eales (J), Rhiannon Davies (J), Zoe Shepherd (T), Hetty Arnfield (T), Lucy Tunnacliffe (T), Hannah May (S), Rachel Keddie (S), Anna Henderson (S), Ella Gollogly (E), Emmeline Strange (E), Florence Wilding (E), Gianluca Malpelli (J), Tom May (J), Charlotte Nossiter (T), Gaia Hill (T), William Bourne (T)

Thanks to all athletes and parents and all the best for March 2012!

Thursday Session
There is still plenty of space in the Thursday group for Kestrels who are in Year 6 or above. The main difference between the Tuesday and Thursday sessions is that we concentrate solely on running on Thursday, as opposed to giving athletes the chance to also do field events on Tuesday.
It turned out to be a very close contest in both groups, but we have our winners in the second Raffle Ticket competition. Ellie Arnfield and Hannah Roberts led their groups the whole way and, despite Ellie almost being caught by a couple of athletes, they both finished first and therefore both win £40 vouchers for JD Sports. Rhianna Reynolds held off the Bartle sisters to come 2nd in the Tuesday group, while Amy Richardson couldn’t quite overturn Eliie’s lead in the Sunday group, but held on for second. Both girls win £10 vouchers.
Well done to all four of our winners for their commitment to the Kestrel club and their team effort in competitions for Kingston, and well done to all Kestrels for their hard work, good behaviour and competitive spirit!
The final standings are as follows:
Tuesday Group
Hannah Roberts: 33
Rhianna Reynolds: 29
Eleanor Bartle: 28
Kathryn Bartle: 26
Annabel Hobday: 23
Sunday Group
Ellie Arnfield: 28
Amy Richardson: 27
Eleanor McDonnell: 26
Rhiannon Davies: 21
Bethan Davies: 20
Competing for Kingston and Poly
The first month of 2012 has seen a few competitions already, with the Cross Country and Sportshall seasons in full swing.
Amy Richardson and Rhianna Reynolds scored over 120 points between them in the third Sportshall competition of the season at Guildford Spectrum on January 24th. Harry Schwartz was one of only three Under 13 boys to represent Kingston and Poly, so a big well done for his commitment!
January 28th saw the Kingston and Poly Cross Country Championships, which was part of a wider Kingston Schools’ race. Kathryn Bartle won the U11 girls trophy, closely followed by Annabel Hobday, Eleanor McDonnell, Eleanor Bartle and Hannah Roberts. Gregor Hooke was first in the U11 boys category, narrowly beating Sam Shaw and Blaize Lee-Blackwood. Rebecca Keddie was highest placed in the U13 girls contest, in which Rhianna also competed.
Well done to everyone who competed and thank you for your great commitment!
Kestrel Challenge January 2012
Luckily, there was no ice this month for the Kestrel Challenges, so the original plan of 400m, 1200m, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put could take place as planned—not that some Kestrels were happy with this news! Despite the chilly conditions, there were some very impressive performances and fast times in the track events.
A reminder of the criteria to win a badge: Athletes need to achieve two of a particular standard in each event group to win a badge. For example, an athlete who has achieved Silver in High Jump but only Bronze in Long Jump will only win a Bronze Jump badge, whereas someone who has a Silver standard in both High and Long Jump will win Silver.
The following athletes won badges during the January Challenge 2012: (S=Sprints, E=Endurance, J=Jumps, T=Throws)
Green: Florence Wilding (S), Katharine Hurwitz (E), Molly Claridge (J), Harry Moran (S), Jessica Hilton (S), Annie Hammett (S), Lucia Eales (E), George Storey (J), Alfie Moran (T), Helena Hubner (T)
Bronze: Finlay Hardwick (S), Hannah Roberts (S), Katharine Hurwitz (S), Katie Flint (S), Tom May (E), Blaize Lee-Blackwood (J), Daniel Dutra (S), James Hinton (E), George Chaplin (E), Madeleine Jheeta (J), Amy Richardson (J), Charlie Townend (J)
Silver: Molly Claridge (S), Amelia Steans (J)
Note: There is currently a shortage of Bronze Sprint badges, so those who have won one will unfortu-nately have to wait. We will get some more in as soon as possible.
Thanks to all athletes and parents and all the best for February 2012!
6th January 2012
Thursday Session
Remember, there is another Kestrels session that takes place on a Thursday from 17.00 to 18.15. This new session focuses solely on running rather than both track and field events, so it is a very good opportunity for those who enjoy sprinting, middle– and long-distance to work on their technique and see their times come crashing down!
Kestrel Raffle Tickets
The second Raffle Ticket competition has almost finished. At the end of January 2012, the athlete in first place in each group will win a £40 gift voucher to spend on sports goods and equipment, and a £10 voucher for second place. Remember: The Tuesday group and Sunday group have separate contests going on, so we will have 4 athletes winning prizes at the end of January!
Tips on how to gain raffle tickets include:
- Turning up early to Kestrels (10 minutes early or more).
- Good behaviour and listening to coaches — this is very important. We want everyone to have fun and don’t at all mind chatting and playing around, but a lack of respect for coaches and acting dangerously will result in badges and raffle tickets being withheld until a noticeable improvement is made.
- Outstanding effort whilst practising individual events.
- Good performances during Kestrel Challenges.
- Competing for Kingston and Polytechnic in Track and Field and/or Cross-Country competitions—any Kestrel who competes for the club will get 3 raffle tickets, for each competition they do, which can be a big boost to their total.
- Finally, asking for tickets (unless reminding coaches of ones that were promised) is not a good way to obtain them and may in fact work against you!
As of the last Kestrels session of 2011, the following athletes are leading the way:
Tuesday Group
Hannah Roberts: 22
Rhianna Reynolds: 18
Eleanor Bartle: 18
Kathryn Bartle: 16
Sam Shaw: 15
Ella O'Sullivan: 13
Annabel Hobday: 12
Amelia Steans: 11
Sunday Group
Ellie Arnfield: 26
Amy Richardson: 19
Eleanor McDonnell: 18
Rhiannon Davies: 18
Daniel Dutra: 16
Bethan Davies: 16
Charlie Townend: 15
George Chaplin: 15
Ellie and Hannah have been near the top throughout in their respective competitions and are pulling away ever so slightly. The race for second place is very close in both contests. We’re in the home straight now so let’s see who will win the prizes at the end of January!
Competing for Kingston and Poly
First of all, apologies to Bethan Davies and Rhiannon Davies, who competed in the Kingston Schools Cross Country on 15th November and weren’t mentioned in the December 2011 newsletter. The second Epsom Downs Cross Country League match on 4th December featured Annabel Hobday, Eleanor Bartle, Kathryn Bartle, Eleanor McDonnell, Hannah Roberts, Finlay Hardwick, Rebecca Keddie, Rhianna Reynolds, Gregor Hooke, Sam Shaw and George Chaplin. Rebecca and Rhianna also took part in the Bushy Park runs during the Christmas weekend!
For anyone who wishes to join Kingston and Poly and start competing in important regional competitions, ask Richard or Gill for details on how to register.
Kestrel Challenge December 2011
The Sunday group were met with an icy, slippery track, and for a while it seemed as if the Challenge would have to be postponed—much to the delight of those athletes who don’t really like long runs! Luckily, the sun appeared to melt most of the ice and allowed us to carry out two track and two throwing events without any problems. The Tuesday group were given kinder conditions, and the original plan of 300m, 600m, High Jump and Shot Put was allowed to continue. The High Jump proved to be a very fun contest, with some excellent performances, and the 600m featured PBs for many athletes, albeit not enough to win them a badge.
The following athletes won badges during the December Challenge 2011: (S=Sprints, E=Endurance, J=Jumps, T=Throws)
Green: Daniel Dutra (S), Alfie Moran (S), Eleanor McDonnell (T), Gaia Hill (S), Hannah Roberts (T)
Bronze: James Hinton (S & T), Amy Yuill (T), Daniel Dutra (T), George Chaplin (T), Fraya Robinson (T), Ellie Arnfield (E), Amelia Steans (J), Kathryn Bartle (J), Emmeline Strange (S & J), Chiddy Anywanwu (J)
Silver: Ed Huber (T), Maddie Jheeta (T), Chiddy Anywanwu (S)
Note: There is currently a shortage of Bronze Sprint badges, so those who have won one will unfortu-nately have to wait. We will get some more in as soon as possible.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all athletes and parents!
1st December 2011
Thursday Session
Remember, there is another Kestrels session that takes place on a Thursday from 17.00 to 18.15. This new session focuses solely on running rather than both track and field events, so it is a very good opportunity for those who enjoy sprinting, middle– and long-distance to work on their technique and see their times come crashing down!
Kestrel Raffle Tickets
The second Raffle Ticket competition has two months remaining. At the end of January 2012, the athlete in first place in each group will win a £40 gift voucher to spend on sports goods and equipment, and a £10 voucher for second place. Not a lot in it in both competitions — Sunday in particular is very tight with 8 athletes separated by 1 ticket! The Tuesday group has also seen the Bartle sisters enter the top 5.
Competing for Kingston and Poly
We are now seeing very impressive turnouts for both Cross Country and Sportshall competitions, and long may it continue! The Epsom Downs League on November 6th saw many members of the Kestrel Club taking part: Rebecca Keddie, Sam Shaw, Rhianna Reynolds, George Chaplin, Gregor Hooke, Eleanor McDonnell, Finlay Hardwick, Sami Allan, Kathryn Bartle, Eleanor Bartle, Sammy Woolhouse, Harry Schwartz, Blaize Lee-Blackwood and Hannah Roberts.
Rebecca, Gregor, Finlay, Eleanor and Harry also turned out for the club in the Kingston Schools’ Cross Country Championships on 15th November. Rhianna, Sammy, Sam, Rebecca and Gregor were also joined by Amy Richardson and a debut for Charlie Townend in the Surrey Sportshall competition at the Guidlford Spectrum on 27th November. Thank you to everyone who competed for the club, and all athletes will receive 3 raffle tickets for each competition that they do.
Kestrel Challenge November 2011
Some more new faces won badges in the November Kestrel Challenge. The Tuesday group had to contend with wet weather, and although Sunday was a better day, the Kestrels found good results hard to come by. We have now started another Kestrels session that takes place on a Thursday from 17.00 to 18.15. The second Raffle Ticket competition is now two months old. At the end of January 2012, the athlete in first place in each group will win a £40 gift voucher to spend on sports goods and equipment, and a £10 voucher for second place. Competing for Kingston and Poly
The Cross Country and Sportshall seasons have begun, and a few Kestrels have already represented Kingston and Poly, helping them to some very good results. Rhianna Reynolds joined up with former Kestrels Aida Gebray and Pippa Earley to help the Under 13 girls to a 2nd-placed finish at the Guildford Spectrum on 23rd October. Ben Paton recorded great individual results on the same day for a depleted boys’ team.
The Young Athlete Cross-Country Relays on 22nd October saw Sam Shaw, George Chaplin, Eleanor Bartle, Rebecca Keddie and Ben Paton all perform brilliantly. Well done to everyone who competed and we hope to see more Kestrels put on K&P colours in more winter events—just speak to Gill Broderick and Richard Holt for information of upcoming competitions as well as how to become a member of Kingston and Poly Athletics Club, which will allow athletes to compete. Remember 3 raffle tickets will be awarded for each competition you do!

Both girls will receive 3 raffle tickets each and Rhianna is close to achieving Gold Badge Standard in Jumps and Throws, with 1.21m in the High Jump and 6.48m in the Shot Put. A British Athletics League meeting is taking place at Kingsmeadow on Saturday 13th August — The Kingston and Polytechnic Senior team are competing in the event, and Kestrel coaches Chris and Humphrey are due to take part. We would like to encourage as many Kestrels as possible to come down to Kingsmeadow for the day and experience what a high-level athletics competition is like — and to see what their coaches are capable of! The meeting will start at 12.30, with track events beginning at 14.00.
It could also be a good opportunity for Kestrels to get their own back on Chris and Humphrey and tell them what to improve on! We hope to see as many of you there as possible, and there will be other coaches at the track to look after everyone and to answer any questions that Kestrels have during the day.
Thanks to all parents and athletes and best wishes for August 2011!

Kestrel Raffle Tickets
One of the initiatives of the K&P Kestrels Club is the raffle ticket prize system. During each session, raffle tickets are given out to Kestrels who are punctual, who behave well, and who give their all during the various activities and challenges that we put on. After every couple of months, the person with the most raffle tickets in the Tuesday and the person with the most in the Sunday group will receive a prize - the next prize will be given to the athletes with the most raffle tickets at the end of July. The following Kestrels have earned the most tickets so far:
Tuesday Group
Kathryn Bartle: 31
Eleanor Bartle: 30
Oscar Tyrell: 30
Louis Schofield-Sinden: 29
Marcus Syyrila: 26
Pippa Earley: 25
Sunday Group
Rebecca Keddie: 35
Millie Swinchen-Rew: 16
Aoife Madden: 15
Rhiannon Davies: 14
Sammy Woolhouse: 13
Aida Gebray: 12
We encourage as many Kestrels as possible to represent our parent club, Kingston and Polytechnic Harriers, in one of the many athletics meets around South-West London. Any athlete who participates in a club competition will receive 3 raffle tickets (for each competition they do), as well as have their name mentioned on the K&P website and get a profile on the national ranking website, the Power of 10.
For boys, the Ebbisham League is a good opportunity to compete in track and field events, with age groups from Under 11 to Under 17. The equivalent for girls is the Lily B League, with the same age groups and same events on offer. We have al-ready had many Kestrels turn out for Kingston and Poly, and these are: Adam Henderson, Alex Line, Beau Downey, Blaize Lee-Underwood, Eleanor Bartle, Elias Syyrila, Gregor Hooke, Kathryn Bartle, Olivia Sivitter, Rebecca Keddie and Sophia Free.
Many thanks and well done to these athletes and hopefully we will see many more names added to the list the near future!
Kestrel Badges and Awards
A competition that the Kestrel Club runs each month is the ‘Kestrel Challenge’, which is allows all athletes to put what they’ve learned during coaching throughout the year to the test and have a chance at winning a badge. The events are split up into the groups ‘Sprints’, ’Endurance’, ‘Jumps’, and ‘Throws’, and athletes can win a badge in each of these for their performances. Badges range from Green to Gold, with a certain time or distance required in order to achieve each colour. When an athlete achieves two performances of a badge standard in one event group, then he or she will earn a badge for that group. So, for example, an athlete who achieves a Bronze standard in the 100m and 200m will win a Bronze badge for Sprints, but one who achieves Bronze in Long Jump and Green in Triple Jump will only win a Green Badge for Jumps. All of the badges are a reward for hard work, so anyone who has won one already should feel proud of their performances and effort!
Kestrel Challenge June 2011

22nd March 2011
Over the last 18 months the Kestrel Club has flourished from one or two athletes for the one session a week to having 70 children registered and enjoying the full range of athletics events. After initially setting up on a Tuesday we have extended to a Sunday session as well and hopefully will introduce more sessions in the future.
Many of the athletes are now competing in the various leagues that Kingston and Polytechnic Harriers are involved in and a few have even progressed to more senior groups, which has always been the goal of the club as we look to develop athletics talent in the South West London area.
Athletes are coached on a ratio of about 1 coach for each 8 athletes, so they get the attention they deserve in fast moving sessions that usually involve some running, jumping and throwing. Prizes are given for those who perform and behave well and it is good to see the youngsters keen to come back week after week with many now having been members for over a year.
