A Time to Jump
– Michael Folley

This book charts the highs and lows of the career of Jonathan Edwards from his childhood, through the highs of the World Championships and World Record in 1995 in Gothenburg, and finishes after the disaster, as it seemed to him, of only getting the bronze medal at the World Championships in Seville in 1999.

It leaves him preparing for the Sydney Olympics, which might perhaps be added to the book as a further chapter at a later date.

The whole way through the book one is aware of the agonising that Edwards undergoes while trying to bring together the career of a top-class athlete and his strong personal spiritual beliefs. Two particularly difficult areas to resolve are those of whether he should compete on a Sunday, and how the financial rewards that have come with his success marry in with his Christian ideals.

It is a very readable book, which as well as naturally concentrating on Jonathan Edwards himself, provides a fascinating insight into the stresses that being close to a world-class athlete puts on his family and friends.

How long’s the course?
– Roger Black

This is a well written autobiography by one of the most popular and intelligent athletes that Britain has ever produced.

From showing prodigious talent as a teenager until he won Olympic Silver in Atlanta, Roger Black was one of the best athletes in the country and his dedication and drive are an example to all athletes who follow him.

This book relays the personal details behind the public image, overcoming a series of problems, including long-term injury and illness, and details of how he felt about his ambition, training and attitude to racing.

This book is recommended to anyone who would like to know more about the sort of person it takes to become a top-class athlete.
